Divorce is never pretty, especially when there is mega-money, fame and kids involved. Prime example: Robert De Niro and Grace Hightower whose tumultuous two-year marriage fell apart in 1999 after Grace 50, a former flight attendant, accused De Niro of infidelity and drug abuse. They’ve clashed over custody of their son Elliot, 5, yet despite nasty accusations in court, they’ve kept their relationship civil. The threesome just celebrated De Niro’s 60th birthday in Italy. Their secret? Putting Elliot first.

. “Kids feel responsible when parents divorce,” says Ava Cadell, Ph.D., author of Twelve Steps to Everlasting Love. “It’s critical they feel it’s not their fault and that their normal lives aren’t disrupted.”
